It's official. The School Board approved the Band Department to take an unforgettable trip to Hawaii in November 2015.
The first trip informational meeting will be held Tuesday, March 11 at 7:00pm in the South High School theater. All students currently in 7th through 10th Grade are invited to the meeting where details for the trip will be announced. Three students from the Raymore-Peculiar Band participated in the 2014 Missouri All-State Band. Earning a seat in the All-State Band is the highest honor a high school band student can receive. Students from all across the state audition for this group. To be eligible, students must first audition and make the All-District level band. The band rehearsed at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach during the Missouri Music Educators Association conference held Wednesday, January 22, 2014 through Saturday, January 25, 2014. The All-State Band performed on the final day of the music conference under the direction of Dr. Mallory Thompson, Director of Bands, Northwestern University. Several additional Raymore-Peculiar band students received honors for their audition to the All-State Band. Sawyer Bletscher was named as an alternate and Mara Beedle, Drew Evans, and Daichi Tadokoro were listed in the Honorable Mention Band. You can order a competition band shirt for a limited time...CLICK HERE (NOTE: Shirts are no longer available to order). Ray-Pec High School's "Competition" Marching Band has began practice this week and is off to a great start! This year we invited two guest clinicians, AAron Bryan and Melissa Goff, to work with students during the first two days of camp. Mr. Bryan and Ms. Goff have extensive marching band experience and provided an amazing wealth of knowledge and skill to our students and staff. Along with Head Director John Wilson and the Assistant Directors Dillon Jarrett, Jennifer Gibson, and Linda Pierson, we are pleased to introduce additional staff members to our team. Taylor Starks, a new Ray-Pec math teacher, will serve as our Percussion Instructor. Mr. Starks has percussion experience with the Blue Springs Golden Regiment and University of Central Missouri marching bands. Cecil Short, a current Ray-Pec English teacher, will serve as our Color Guard Instructor. Mr. Short has marching band and color guard experience with the Odessa Band of Distinction and the University of Central Missouri marching bands. Mr. Short is also getting additional assistance from his sister, Cassandra Wright. The Raymore-Peculiar High School Concert and Symphonic Bands both earned the highest rating of Superior at the MSHSAA State Music Festival Thursday night. Each band performed high quality literature for three judges who each give their own rating. Both bands earned a solid Superior rating from each of these judges. The bands also perform never-before-seen music for a fourth judge in the sight-reading room. The bands are given six minutes to look over the music without playing a note and then perform the entire piece of music. Symphonic Band earned a Superior rating in this portion as well. The four judge's ratings are combined to make one overall rating for each group.
While the Symphonic Band has consistently earned Superior ratings for many years, this is only the second time in Ray-Pec history for the Concert Band to earn this achievement. "I'm really proud of what the Concert Band has accomplished this year. Besides earning a Superior rating, they are performing at a higher level than they ever have before. The growth of our program is not only in numbers, but in quality, too," said Assistant Band Director Dillon Jarrett. The Symphonic Band is under the direction of John Wilson, Director of Bands. The Concert Band is under the direction of Assistant Directors Jennifer Gibson and Dillon Jarrett. The Bands are also assisted by Linda Pierson and student teacher Nathaniel Orr. The Raymore-Peculiar High School was awarded a top state honor for the second year in a row. The band has been selected to perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association annual state conference.
Bands from all across the state submit recordings to be considered. Unbiased, out-of-state judges come in to listen to each groups recording without knowing which band they are listening to. The judges select the top groups to perform during the conference. Ray-Pec's Symphonic Band, under the direction of John Wilson, were selected in 2012 and again in 2013. This is unusual because groups typically are not allowed to submit recording for three years after being selected. However, the Missouri Bandmaster's Association waived this limitation in celebration of the MMEA's 75th Conference. This allowed all bands across the state to submit auditions regardless of when their group last performed at the conference. Two students from Raymore-Peculiar High School earned a place in the Missouri All-State Band. This band is filled with outstanding musicians who first made the All-District Band and then competed against the other top musicians in the state. The All-State Band is a huge honor for high school students. It is one of the most difficult honors to achieve and it offers an amazing experience for the students involved. From Ray-Pec, Logan Jungman and Jack Renfro were selected after a rigorous audition process in Columbia, Missouri. The students prepared several very difficult musical passages as well as their major, melodic minor, and chromatic scales. Logan earned fourth chair tuba and Jack earned second chair tenor saxophone. |
